Project Beacon helps people who are experiencing human trafficking. Project Beacon fills the cultural and spiritual gap for services to American Indian/Alaska Native people in the Seattle area. While focused on the American Indian/Alaska Native population, Project Beacon will serve any victim of trafficking we encounter, regardless of race, age, or gender.

Project Beacon goals:

  • Provide comprehensive services using a wholistic approach includes traditional healing.
  • Train other service providers and create collaborative partnerships on issues of human trafficking and cultural competency.
  • Engage and inform the public about human trafficking through awareness campaigns.

Our services are free, confidential and safe:

  • Cultural Healing– smudging, talking circles
  • Education– GED test preparation, online classes for Microsoft Office, assistance applying for higher learning
  • Employment– Resume and cover letter preparation, job search and employment referral
  • Outreach and Engagement– Street outreach to unsheltered persons including victims of sex trafficking and victims of domestic violence
  • Day Center– Full hygiene services, laundry, internet access, HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis screening, financial empowerment training, and other self-help opportunities
  • Community Meal Program– Breakfast and Lunch are served at the Seattle Indian Center Monday-Friday. Breakfast goes from 9-10 am and lunch is on from 12-1:15 pm
  • Family Reunification– Support in reuniting with family and/or tribal community
  • Mail Services– This is a safe and secure place to receive mail
  • Transportation Services– We provide transportation in the form of staff accompaniment and/or bus tickets
  • Substance Abuse Treatment– We host an Alcoholics Anonymous group here on Wednesdays at 2 pm and Narcotics Anonymous on Thursdays at 7 pm. We offer referrals to other cessation programs in the Seattle area.
  • Housing– Through Tillie’s Safehouse, we can provide short-term emergency shelter. Our case managers provide referrals for transitional and permanent housing.

Tillie’s Safehouse

Tillie’s Safe House provides emergency short-term housing for clients of Project Beacon, as well as those who have experienced domestic violence. Through Tillie’s, we ensure human trafficking victims and survivors are removed from immediate danger and take a first step on the path toward healing! Once in the care of Tillie’s Safe House, the victim can receive hygiene items, make-up products and emergency clothing based on availability.

Tillie Cavanaugh was a founder of the American Indian Women’s Service League (AIWSL). AIWSL is the founding agency for the Seattle Indian’s Center and several other AI/AN oriented agencies in Seattle. Tillie was devoted to improving the lives of AI/AN people that moved from reservations into the city. She was a member of the Spirit Lake Sioux Tribe in Fort Totten, ND.
